Google says it still allows third party apps to scan data from gmail accounts

Google Inc. told Washington lawmakers that it continues to allow other companies to scan and share data from Gmail accounts, a top google official said the company allows app developers to scan gmail accounts.

'Developers may share data with 3rd parties so long as they are transparent with the users about how they are using the data' the company's vice president Susan Molinari has said this.

Using the software tools provided by Gmail and other email services, outside app developers can access information about what people can buy where they can travel and which friends or colleagues they can interact with the most.

Google and other email providers have permitted hundreds of 3rd party apps to collect data with the permission of users and they often do this by tracking shopping receipts and planning travel itineraries, by analyzing the billions of emails.
